Bellavista Golf Club

Huelva, Andalusia

Bellavista is the oldest golf club on mainland Spain, founded in 1916 by the British mining community connected to the nearby Rio Tinto mines, the same wave of settlers who also founded one of the country's oldest football clubs. The original nine-hole course, with sand greens, sat in Huelva itself; the club moved to its current site in Aljaraque in 1976, where José Luis Recasens designed the 18-hole parkland layout that's played today.

It's a proper members' club in the traditional British style, with tree-lined fairways, well-placed bunkers protecting the greens, and several doglegs across genuinely undulating ground. Five par-3s keep things varied, four of them to elevated greens, and the whole layout rewards accurate positioning over raw length. The greens themselves are a consistent highlight: firm, good-sized and slightly contoured.

Facilities are modest rather than flashy, in keeping with the club's understated, members'-club character, but the driving range, putting green and staff are all well regarded. For golfers who want a genuine piece of Spanish golfing history, played the way it's been played for over a century, this is well worth the visit.
